At Durban II: A shift is needed on American campuses

For too long, Israel has been singled out by the United Nations: the special committees established to investigate the actions of Israel and only Israel; the endless resolutions passed against Israel; the special status granted to Palestinian refugees, which allows them to remain refugees despite being citizens of Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and yes, Switzerland too.

Geneva, Switzerland With the close last week of the United Nations Durban II Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerances, the world’s oppressed should feel no safer. What went on in Geneva was a spectacle that would have made even the most jaded observer of international politics wince, and one that more than justified the conference’s boycott by the US, Canada, Germany and Israel, among others.

Last week I came face to face with evil, as I stood just a few feet away from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. We were both staying in the same hotel in Geneva. He was there to be the opening speaker at Durban II, a review and reprise of Durban I, the United Nations sponsored conference on racism that had turned into a racist hate fest against the Jewish people and the Jewish state. I was there--along with Elie Wiesel, Irwin Cotler and others who have devoted their lives to combating bigotry--to try to prevent a recurrence of Durban I.
